The all new Jeep Wrangler has made its official global debut at the Los Angeles motor show today, with parent company Chrysler claiming it to be “the most capable SUV ever “.

The refreshed model carries all of the traditional Jeep design cues and comes in two variants, each of which is sub-divided into different trim levels. The 2-door model has three different trim options, namely, Sport, Sport S and Rubicon; and the 4-door model gets the same plus an extra fourth configuration dubbed “Sahara”.

Externally, the 2018 car gets a wider stance as well as a lowered beltline with larger windows for better outward visibility. And while the Jeep design team have retained the familiar seven-slot grille, it nevertheless incorporates an updated look that now shows both of the outer grille slats intersecting with the iconic round headlamps, which the designers say is a homage to the Jeep CJ. The top of the keystone-shaped grille has also been gently swept back for improved aerodynamics. 

Likewise, the windshield’s rake has been reshaped for improved aerodynamics and features a new four bolt design at the top of the windshield’s frame to allow the windshield to fold down more quickly and easily than before. A new header bar now connects the A-pillars and stays in place even when the windshield is folded down. This allows the rearview mirror to remain in place even with the windshield folded. 

Additional details include new lightweight aluminium doors that now feature the Torx bit tool size stamped directly onto the hinge to eliminate guessing which tool size is needed to remove the doors. Also new for 2018, all Wranglers feature body-coloured sport bars, which are welded to the body and feature integrated grab handles.

On the SUV’s inside, there’s a full-colour LED instrument cluster, the choice of 5.0, 7.0- or 8.4-inch touchscreens with pinch-and-zoom capability, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features. For safety, there are claimed to be more than 75 active and passive systems available. 

Underneath the Wrangler’s body-on-frame constructed design, there’s a five-link suspension, as well as two 4×4 systems, a new full-time two-speed transfer case, electric front- and rear-axle lockers, a limited-slip differential and, on Rubicon models, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect that provides additional wheel travel when the terrain calls for it. 

And talking of terrain, the new model manages an approach angle of 44 degrees, breakover angle of 27.8 degrees, departure angle of 37 degrees and a ground clearance of 10.9 inches. It can also traverse through water up to 30 inches high and tow up to 1588 kg with the optional towing package. 

In terms of performance, new engines will be joining the 2018 Wrangler line-up, including an all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder and a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6, both of which will be mated to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. 

Expected to arrive in Britain by 2019, the next-generation Wrangler will be built at Chrysler’s Toledo plant in Ohio.
